What is Cometfall?
Cometfall is a cosmic alternative rock project from Helsinki, Finland: psychedelic, spacious, and heavier than it first sounds. It is the solo project of Kimmo Ihanus, built from riffs and demos he first wrote more than a decade ago alongside new material written for the records.
Is Cometfall a band or one person?
One person. Cometfall is Kimmo Ihanus. He writes the lyrics and the melodies, produces the records, and plays bass on them. There are no other members, and there have never been any invented ones.
That is the current state rather than a permanent one. Bringing musicians in is the next phase, and the form is deliberately open: a standing live band, a rotating cast, or session players on the next record.
What does Cometfall sound like?
Alternative rock with a psychedelic, cosmic pull. Progressive structures that do not resolve where you expect, real bass sitting low in the mix, wide space around the guitars, and choruses built to be big. The records get heavier the further into them you go.
For reference points, the neighbourhood is somewhere between Soundgarden, Tool, Tame Impala and Muse.

Buried Elsewhere is the debut: Spark, Signal, Fold, Buried Elsewhere, Am I Still Alive, The Orange Jang and Cosmic Silence. Paper and Hope is led by the single Paper Radio, released 11 September 2026, followed by Undertow on 25 September. Move Me, Great Power is preceded through November by Held Under Light, Machinery of Stars, Wild Tommy Rain, Ashes in Blue and I Forgot How to Move.
What are Cometfall songs about?
Broadly: the cosmos, the mind, and the afterworld, and underneath most of them the fact of still being here.
The recurring cast is people who keep something going without being seen doing it. Lighthouse keepers. The one who always went last. Figures who bear a light without ever being lit by it.
The imagery reaches outward, to comets and orange skies and the machinery of stars and old folktales about what waits past the edge. But the songs tend to land somewhere quite human and quite stubborn, usually near relief, defiance, or the plain joy of not being finished yet.
Is Cometfall made with AI?
AI tools are part of the production workflow, and that has never been hidden. The lyrics, melodies, structures and bass are Kimmo's own, and a lot of the material started as MIDI demos he wrote between the mid-2000s and the mid-2010s. Keeper of the Light, on the December album, began as a 2007 file. Paper Radio came from a 2010 demo.
Not every song takes the same route. Some were built alone in MIDI, some came out of jamming with other people, some go through AI, and most are a mixture. None of those is the right or wrong way to finish a song. What stays constant is the seed: the idea, the core melody and the words are his.

Does Cometfall play live?
Not yet. Taking the songs to actual musicians is the next phase. Kimmo has played in a lot of lineups over the years and knows good people, and the material is now finished enough to bring to them.
