Buried Elsewhere

Title track · debut album Buried Elsewhere
Released 14 August 2026 · 4:10 · track 4 of 7
Words, music, bass: Kimmo Ihanus

A song about drifting so far from where you started that no one is left to say your name, and still moving. Light from a dead star: you only notice what someone was after they are gone. It took a decade, one riff, two sets of lyrics and a churchyard in central Finland to get there.

It started as “Space Odysseya”

The song was first called Space Odysseya. “Odyssey” looks like a typo, and it most likely was one. I just liked the sound of it, so it stayed.

The whole thing is built on one constant, driving bass riff that sits there for the entire song. I wrote it on bass, not guitar, and then kept adding layers on top of it: machine drums, guitar riffs, synth layers that build the outro. It became really cool, in my opinion.

The original demo from 2016 is still up, exactly as it was, under my old ihmissuti account.

The words that would not fit

The first lyrics I wrote for it were a space journey. A ship faster than light, five hundred years passing like a moment, folding through space toward the place where everything began. No one sees us, no one hears us. We get a new chance.

Original lyrics · Space OdysseyaCell spikes devour flesh and mind Five hundred years was only a moment ago Light and time cannot escape from here We vanish into the fold wait just a moment longer Faster than light, a road full of nothing Meaning disappears as we speed through the night We travel through the vastness of space No one sees us No one hears us We arrive at the place where everything began We get a new chance A seamless spiral bends the mass an immense force carries us toward the very beginning We make this journey, only for your sake No one sees us No one hears us We arrive at the place where everything began We get a new chance

Never recorded on this riff

Then I hit the concrete wall I often hit: I could not fit the lyrics into the song. The riff and the words never locked together. So the song got parked.

The words did not stay parked. A little modified, they became Fold, which is track 3 of the same album, one song before this one. Two tracks on Buried Elsewhere come from the same night, in a sense.

A graveyard in Laukaa

The idea for Buried Elsewhere came later, at a graveyard in Laukaa, Finland. They have a memorial there to those who are buried elsewhere. Around it are a lot of old graves from the civil war era of 1918 and from the Second World War, and many headstones that still tell you what the people who lived through those times did for a living.

I cannot say I felt over-emotional seeing the monument. But it hit a spot, and it got me thinking about it from some kind of cosmic angle. I wrote a sketch where the “buried elsewhere” live somewhere beyond our time.

The forgotten army

Into that sketch I started folding lines inspired by the forgotten army in The Lord of the Rings: the dead who wait under the mountain until, eventually, they are called to fulfil their duty. That is where these three lines come from.

We were called
to be consumed
by the dark

It is all a bit scattered, but that is how it was in my head. The finished lyrics did not get anywhere close to all of those ideas. They just sounded far better on the riffs than anything more literal, so they stayed.

Lyrics

Verse 1Drifting past where mind is blind I left my name behind circling somewhere beyond our time We were called to be consumed by the dark I remember your face and disappear Pre-chorusNo sound No hum I become my own void ChorusWe who are buried elsewhere Unnamed Forgotten by time Verse 2Light that comes from the dead never left the way it arrived I traced your shape in the black A star that burned before I looked Pre-chorusNo sound No hum I become my own void ChorusWe who are buried elsewhere Unnamed Forgotten by time BridgeStill moving Still moving Away The distance has no name I have no name out here OutroDrifting past Beyond our time Unnamed Already gone
